The canopy of trees arching over our streets is a defining feature of Rosedale Park’s historic charm. To preserve this legacy, Rosedale Park Improvement Association (RPIA) is proud to support the City of Detroit’s latest green initiative.
We are looking for residents to help us fill the gaps in our neighborhood forest.
Do You Have a Tree on Your Berm?
Take a look at the front of your home. Do you have a tree on your berm? The berm is that specific slice of green space located between the sidewalk and the street.
As we look to enhance our blocks, we are asking every household to consider two questions:
- Does your berm need a tree?
- Do you want a tree?
If the answer to both is “yes,” the City of Detroit is offering Free City Street Trees to be planted right in our community.
How to Get Started: Submit Your Request
While the city encourages neighbors to coordinate, the primary way to get the process moving is to submit your request directly. You can do this in one of three ways:
-
Email: Send your address and any tree species preferences to treeplanting@detroitmi.gov.
-
Online: Fill out the official form at bit.ly/DetroitTreeRequest
What the Process Looks Like
Once your request is approved and a site inspection is completed, the city follows a four-phase process during the week of planting:
-
Phase 1: Utilities Marked – You will notice various colored flags and spray-painted markings indicating the locations of underground utility lines.
-
Phase 2: Location Marked – Once utilities are identified, the team uses neon spray paint to mark the exact spots where the new trees will go.
-
Phase 3: Tree & Mulch Dropped – The new tree and a pile of mulch will be placed in the berm in front of your home.
-
Phase 4: Tree is Planted – Your tree is officially planted! City-approved vendors will handle the watering and trimming for the first three years.
After those first three years, the ongoing care and love for the tree are up to you.
